# Verdicts

> What valid, risky and invalid mean, and how to read the reasons.

Every result has a `verdict` and a list of `reasons` that explain it.

| Verdict | What it means |
| - | - |
| `valid` | The number sits in an allocated mobile or landline block and nothing about it was flagged. |
| `risky` | The number is real but needs a second look: a VoIP or CLEC line, a gap in a pooled block, a toll-free or premium-rate number, or a pattern that looks made up. |
| `invalid` | The prefix or block isn't allocated, the number is in the reserved fictional range (555-0100 to 555-0199), or it isn't a valid +1 number at all. |

## Real examples

These are real responses (trimmed):

```json theme={null}
{ "e164": "+12122671234", "phone_type": "fixed_line", "verdict": "valid",   "reasons": ["allocated fixed_line block, clean pattern"] }
{ "e164": "+16502530000", "phone_type": "voip",       "verdict": "risky",   "reasons": ["VoIP/CLEC carrier (disposable/spoofable)"] }
{ "e164": "+18002752273", "phone_type": "toll_free",  "verdict": "risky",   "reasons": ["non-geographic toll_free number"] }
{ "e164": "+12125550123", "phone_type": "unknown",    "verdict": "invalid", "reasons": ["reserved fictional range (555-0100..0199)"] }
{ "e164": null,           "phone_type": "unknown",    "verdict": "invalid", "reasons": ["not a valid NANP number (format)"] }
```

## Using verdicts

* Treat `reasons` as the detail behind the verdict. Show them to your team, or branch on `phone_type` for finer rules.
* `risky` isn't the same as bad. A business VoIP line can be a perfectly good number to call. Decide what `risky` means for your use case.
* The verdict describes the number's allocation and pattern. It doesn't tell you whether the phone is switched on or who owns it. See [coverage and data](https://docs.mobileintelapi.com/concepts/coverage.md).
