# Line types

> The phone_type field.

`phone_type` tells you what kind of line the number belongs to.

| `phone_type` | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `mobile` | A wireless (cell) number. |
| `fixed_line` | A landline. |
| `voip` | A VoIP or CLEC line. These are often internet phone services, which is why they're marked `risky`. |
| `toll_free` | A toll-free number like 800, 888 or 877. Not tied to a place. |
| `premium_rate` | A premium-rate number like 900. |
| `unknown` | The number couldn't be placed, usually because it's not a valid +1 number or it's unallocated. |

## Related fields

| Field | What it holds |
| - | - |
| `phone_valid` | `true` when the number is a well-formed, allocated +1 number. |
| `carrier` | The carrier the number's block was first allocated to. See [coverage and data](https://docs.mobileintelapi.com/concepts/coverage.md). |
| `phone_region` | City and state or province, like `Toronto, ON`. |
| `country`, `country_code` | For example `Canada`, `CA`. |
| `timezone` | A list of IANA timezones, like `["America/Toronto"]`. |
| `geographical` | `true` when the number is tied to a place (not toll-free). |
| `mode` | Always `static`: the answer comes from numbering data, not a live network check. |
